The three greatest free sights in Berlin, within 800 metres of each other, with no entrance fee. Brandenburg Gate (1791): walk through the central passage from west (former West Berlin side) and stand in what was no-man's land. 5 minutes north: the Reichstag (1894, rebuilt by Norman Foster 1999) — the glass dome is open from 08:00 to midnight, free, pre-registration required. 5 minutes south from the Gate: the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe — 2,711 concrete stelae of varying heights that create a disorienting labyrinth. The underground Information Centre (free, closed Mondays) provides biographical context for Holocaust victims.

Practical Tips

Reichstag dome registration: visite.bundestag.de. Slots every 15 min, 08:00–21:45 (last entry). Book a 09:00 slot — by 10:30 tour groups arrive. Bring the ID registered; they check it at the entrance.
The Rooftop Terrace (one level below the dome): also free, spectacular views, slightly less crowded than the dome itself. Restaurant Käfer Dachgarten is here — €€€ for the view.
Holocaust Memorial Information Centre: closed Mondays. Open Tue–Sun 10:00–20:00 (Oct–Mar until 19:00). The stelae themselves are always open.
Tiergarten park starts 100m west of the Gate — a 15-min walk through the park to the Victory Column (Siegessäule) and back is a good orientation if arriving in the morning.
