Bolzano is the surprising capital of South Tyrol — an Austrian city that ended up in Italy after WWI. The old town mixes German cafés and Italian piazzas with stunning mountain backdrops. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology houses Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,300-year-old mummy from the nearby Alps. Excellent place to stock up before the mountains.

Practical Tips

ZTL covers entire historic centre — do NOT drive a motorhome into the old town. Park at the area sosta near the train station, walk or bus.
Ötzi Museum: book online at iceman.it — queues 45+ min without reservation. €16/adult (2025).
Mercato della Frutta (Piazza delle Erbe): best produce in the region. South Tyrol apple season Sep–Oct — Vinschgau variety is excellent.
Fill gas, water and supplies here — services sparse above 1,500m.
