Kraków Główny station is a 10-minute walk or tram 18/24 to the edge of the Old Town. The Planty ring park (30 hectares of gardens encircling the Stare Miasto on the site of the demolished medieval city walls) transitions directly into the Rynek. The Rynek Główny (200×200m) has been the commercial and civic centre of Poland since 1257 — the Central European trading post between East and West. The Sukiennice (Cloth Hall, 1555) occupies the centre: ground floor Polish amber and folk craft market; upper floor gallery of 19th-century Polish painting (Matejko's Battle of Grunwald is the centrepiece, €10, worth it). St. Mary's Basilica (eastern side): Gothic brick, Veit Stoss's carved wood altarpiece (1477–1489) is the finest example of late-Gothic woodcarving in the world.

Practical Tips

St. Mary's Basilica (Bazylika Mariacka): the Veit Stoss altarpiece opens every day at 11:50 — if you are in the church at this moment (it is the only moment the triptych opens), it is one of the great theatrical moments in European art history. The opening mechanism takes 5 minutes; the gilded figures are 13 metres tall. €5 entry (VERIFY at mariacki.com).
Hejnał from the tower: played every hour, 24/7. The player stops mid-tune each time, regardless of hour. Listen for it while sitting in the Rynek. The noon Hejnał is broadcast live on Polish national radio.
Cloth Hall upper gallery (Galeria Sztuki Polskiej XIX wieku): free with Krakow Tourist Card. The collection is surprisingly strong — Matejko's monumental canvases of Polish historical battles are not just nationalist propaganda, they're extraordinary painting.
Evening Rynek: the square is pedestrianised and lit at night. Sit at any outdoor café on the square perimeter (avoid the prime-location tourist pricing — walk one block off for local prices). Summer: occasional outdoor concerts and events.
