Vrijthof is Maastricht's central square — 200m × 100m, surrounded by café terraces, two basilicas, and the city's grandest facades. Sint Servaasbasiliek (the oldest church in the Netherlands, 4th-century foundations) and the adjacent Sint Janskerk (Lutheran, red-brick tower) flank the square. The Sint Servaas treasury (€5) contains the "Bell of Charlemagne" and the reliquary of Saint Servatius (4th-century bishop of Maastricht) — one of the most important medieval treasuries in the Low Countries. Across Vrijthof on Dominicanerkerkstraat: Boekhandel Dominicanen, consistently listed among the world's most beautiful bookshops — a 13th-century Dominican church converted in 2006 by interior designers Merkx+Girod. Three levels of bookshelves fill the Gothic nave.
Practical Tips
Boekhandel Dominicanen (Dominicanerkerkstraat 1): open Mon 11:00–18:00, Tue–Sat 10:00–18:00, Sun 10:00–18:00 (extended Thu until 21:00). The Coffeelovers café on the ground floor serves coffee under the Gothic vaults — order a flat white and sit at the café tables looking up at the medieval ceiling and the stacked bookshelves. One of the best café settings in the Netherlands.
Sint Servaas Treasury: open Mon–Sat 10:00–17:00, Sun 13:00–17:00. The 15th-century reliquary bust of St Servatius is the finest piece of goldsmithing in the Maas valley.
Vrijthof café terraces: the south side of the square (sunny in the afternoon) is the place to sit for an Okaai (Maastricht's local soft drink — apple-based), a Hertog Jan beer (Limburg's regional lager), or a coffee. More relaxed and authentic than Amsterdam café prices.
Sint Jan Kerk tower (Lutheran, adjacent): €4 climb, best rooftop view of the Vrijthof square and surrounding city. VERIFY current access at visitmaastricht.com.
Friday flea market (Vrijthof, 09:00–14:00): antique dealers and craft stalls. Last Sunday of the month: larger outdoor market at Vrijtof. VERIFY current schedule.
