Princes Street Gardens occupies the valley between Edinburgh's New Town shopping thoroughfare and the sheer volcanic rock of the castle above — a natural decompression zone at the start of the route. Arriving here directly from Waverley Station, you get your first unobstructed sightline to Edinburgh Castle before you've even climbed toward it. Allow around 45 minutes to orientate yourself, take in the castle from below, and settle into the city's pace before the more demanding sites ahead. The gardens open at 7:00 AM daily and close at 9:35 PM, so there is no pressure to rush through on arrival.

Edinburgh Castle sits on the summit of a 700-million-year-old volcanic plug and has served as fortress, royal residence and military garrison across centuries of Scottish history. It is the route's single most time-intensive waypoint — budget at least 150 minutes to do it justice. Within the complex you will find the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh. The scale of the site means it rewards a methodical approach: work upward through the gatehouse and outer defences toward the crown square at the summit. Views over the city from the battlements are among the widest available at any point on this route. Arrive as close to the 9:30 AM opening as possible — this is one of the most visited attractions in Scotland and crowds build quickly through the morning. Last entry is timed to allow exit before the 6:00 PM close.

Greyfriars Kirkyard is one of Edinburgh's oldest burial grounds, occupying a quiet enclosure just below the Grassmarket and a short walk from the castle esplanade. The cemetery has been in use since 1562 and holds the graves of a number of significant figures in Scottish history, alongside elaborate mausoleums and carved table tombs that chart centuries of the city's story in stone. It is also strongly associated with the literary and folkloric Edinburgh that draws many visitors — the dense, atmospheric arrangement of monuments within a compact space makes it unlike any other stop on this route. Open 24 hours, it can be visited at any point in the day, though daylight is necessary for reading inscriptions properly. The 45-minute suggested stay allows a thorough circuit without rushing. From here, the National Museum of Scotland is just two minutes on foot.
