15-minute walk south from the Hauptbahnhof through Mirabellplatz. Mirabell Palace (1606, rebuilt Baroque 1721 after fire) is now Salzburg's city hall. The marble staircase inside (open during business hours, free) has one of the most extraordinary cherub-sculptured banisters in Austria. The formal gardens behind the palace are the iconic Sound of Music location — the "Do-Re-Mi" sequence was filmed here in 1964: the double staircase with the Pegasus fountain below, the dwarf garden, the rose parterre. Free, open from 06:00 daily. Cross the Salzach on the Mozartsteg pedestrian bridge (2001) into the Altstadt.

Practical Tips

Mirabell gardens: arrive before 08:30 to photograph the Sound of Music stairs without tour groups. The Pegasus fountain and steps are on the south side of the garden, facing the fortress view.
Marble Hall inside the palace: one of the finest Baroque interiors in Austria, used for regular evening concerts (Mozart concerts, typically €35–45). Check salzburg.info for schedule if extending to an evening.
Mozartsteg bridge: the best view of the old town from the river — Hohensalzburg fortress above, cathedral towers, cliff face of the Mönchsberg. Best photographed at sunrise (eastern light on the fortress).
The dwarf garden (Zwerglgarten): 28 grotesque marble dwarves from the early 18th century. Moved here from the original garden — some are original, some are replacements.
