Bus 25 from Hauptbahnhof (20 min) to Hellbrunn. Archbishop Markus Sittikus built Hellbrunn in 1619 as a pleasure palace for entertaining — and the trick water fountains in the gardens were his signature form of hospitality. The 300+ water jets are hidden in stone seats, table edges, grottos, garden paths, and mechanical theatre elements, all fed by a single water system using natural gravity from the Hellbrunner Berg. The standard guided tour walks guests through the trick areas, activating each one — getting soaked is mandatory and unavoidable. The theatrical stone theatre (Steintheater, 1617) in the gardens is the oldest open-air theatre north of the Alps. The "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" gazebo from Sound of Music is in the garden — visible but not enterable (filming damage + replicas sold off).

Practical Tips

Trick fountains: only active April 1 – October 31. Closed November–March. VERIFY at hellbrunn.at.
Bring waterproof shoes or be prepared to wet socks — the fountains target guests sitting on the stone benches during the guided tour. Light summer clothes are ideal; no heels on the garden paths.
The "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" gazebo: free to view from the path. The original was moved from its filming location at Leopoldskron to Hellbrunn gardens in the 1990s for preservation. A replica was built for the film; this is the filming-prop original.
Hellbrunner Adventzauber (late November – early January): the Hellbrunn Advent market is staged in and around the palace grounds — more atmospheric than the Salzburg city centre market, with the palace lit at night. Free entry to the market (palace + fountains ticketed separately).
After Hellbrunn: walk 15 minutes north along the Salzach river path back toward the city centre — the most pleasant local walking route in the Salzburg area.
