Bergen — Bryggen Wharf & city orientation
Free PreviewBergen is Norway's gateway to the fjords and a UNESCO city in its own right. Bryggen — the row of coloured 14th-century Hanseatic warehouses along the quay — is the centrepiece. Walk it in the morning, take the Fløibanen funicular to the hilltop for city views, then stock up at the fish market. The city has excellent grocery options; prices jump sharply once you leave for the fjords.
Practical Tips
Campsite: Lone Camping, Hardangervegen 697, 5268 Haukeland (GPS 60.3523, 5.2678). ~€35/night, 15km from city centre, shuttle bus available.
Bergen city toll ring — AutoPASS essential. Rush-hour surcharge applies 06:30–09:00 and 15:00–17:00 weekdays.
Stock up at REMA 1000 or COOP Extra before leaving — rural Norway is 30–50% more expensive.
Fish market sells pre-cooked shrimp by the kilo — budget €10–15/kg to eat on the waterfront.
Fløibanen funicular to the hilltop: €14 return.
Hardangerfjord — Eidfjord & Vøringsfossen
Geirangerfjord — UNESCO viewpoints & fjord cruise
Trollstigen — Norway's most famous mountain road
Ålesund — Art Nouveau harbour city
Atlantic Ocean Road — Atlanterhavsvegen
Trondheim — medieval city & journey end
